Christian Education

Continued growth in the knowledge and love of God is of prime importance to our congregation. Our Christian Education curriculum for children and youth has as its focal point the simple goal of teaching that each of us is a beloved child of God. In the fall, our mission was to preserve continuity and centeredness in God. With the older children, building trust as a bridge across time, seasons, and ages can help form our guiding spirit.

Our curriculum, Seasons of the Spirit, has helped provide Lectionary-based teachings for a range of age groups and offers solid foundational concepts in Scripture while encouraging teachers to incorporate recent research in multiple learning styles. Each week a rich variety of arts expression, from collage to origami and clay painting to theatre and dance, is incorporated into our ministry. This experiential aspect of teaching children to help find God inside themselves and in the world around them helps us all to live out an embodied faith in Jesus Christ.

Our programs for children take place during the Worship service at 10 AM to approximately 11:15 AM each Sunday. Most Sundays (but not Communion Sundays), children (age 3 to 5th grade) begin in the Sanctuary, then go downstairs to classrooms during the second hymn. On Communion SundaysCommunion symbol, children begin downstairs in their classrooms and then come up to the Sanctuary for Communion with their family. During holiday weekends, when a lower than usual attendance is anticipated, all children are invited to a One Room Church School rather than their regular classes. Children will be involved in specially-designed activities meant to encourage a strong community of faith. Professional child care is available in the nursery for infants through age three. Ask the Deacon or greeter at the door on Sunday morning for the location of the nursery or any other details of the day's schedule will be, or check the Calendar.

Senior youth after sorting foodYouth  in grades 6--12 are invited to join the Youth Group. It is a great opportunity for youth to grow in their faith and knowledge of God. The youth meet on various Sunday mornings and evening times to unite in community building. In 2011 we will undertake service projects, local fun, and meaningful activities.

Adult Education includes scripture, other lessons on spirituality, contemporary social issues, and concerns within NHCC itself.  Adults usually meet in the Parlor after worship and fellowship time but not in the summer or on school vacation weekends.  See the Calendar for information.
